Gaetano Zumbo (c.1656–1701) was an Italian pastry chef and sculptor who became famous for his elaborate sugar sculptures and pastries. He worked in Naples and Rome, and his creations were widely praised throughout Europe. Zumbo is considered one of the pioneers of the Neapolitan pastry and confectionery tradition. Some of his most famous works included life-sized sculptures of animals, mythological figures, and monumental architectural pieces, all made entirely from sugar. Zumbo was also known for his delicate and refined pastries, such as profiteroles, baba, sfogliatelle, and cassata, which he created for the royal court, aristocrats, and other wealthy patrons. Despite his fame and success, Zumbo died in poverty at the age of 45, leaving behind a legacy of artistry and innovation in the pastry world.
